Filey Museum - Room3 - The Victorian Room

«back

Here you see how this room might well have looked in the 1880’s, during Queen Victoria’s reign.  Mother and Father are dressed soberly, in front of the red glow of a coal fire, with the brass fender and hot water bottle ready for one of the children to go to bed.

The room is authentically cluttered with glass, china and silver, as the Victorians liked to show off their possessions.  There is a harmonium in the corner and pictures and ornaments everywhere.

Studying this room in detail will reveal samples of embroidery and a display of jet jewellery, made so popular by Queen Victoria in her widowhood.  Samples of jet can be found in the cliffs just up the coast from Filey.
